The Capron Park Zoo community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kayla Raschke, a beloved colleague, friend, and dedicated animal keeper whose compassion for wildlife touched many lives.
From an early age, Kayla dreamed of working closely with animals. Inspired by the film Free Willy, she developed a lasting passion for building trusting relationships with animals and helping them participate in their own care. Through education, volunteering, and internships, she turned that childhood dream into a fulfilling career and eventually brought her dedication and expertise to Capron Park Zoo.
Kayla had a particular love for whales and warthogs, but those who knew her remembered her ability to recognize the individual personality of every animal she cared for. Everett the warthog, Kela the beluga whale, and the Reeves’ Muntjacs at Capron Park Zoo were especially meaningful to her.
She was also proud to serve as Vice Coordinator of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Reeves’ Muntjac Species Survival Plan Program. Her work with the muntjacs, including their distinctive calls at mealtime, was among the experiences she cherished most.
According to an account shared by those close to her, Kayla experienced a severe migraine before suffering a clot-related stroke. Although she received emergency and hospital treatment, she sadly passed away. These medical circumstances are based on the reported personal account and have not been independently verified.
Beyond her career, Kayla was remembered as a kind, loyal, and caring friend. Loved ones and colleagues will treasure memories of hiking, concerts, movies, marine mammals, and everyday moments shared together.
Kayla leaves behind a legacy of compassion, curiosity, trust, and devotion to animals. Her influence will live on through the animals she cared for and the people she inspired. She will be deeply missed by her loved ones, friends, colleagues, and the entire Capron Park Zoo community.
