The St. Johns, Florida, community is mourning the reported death of Justin Milliken, owner of the Grumpy’s Restaurant location in St. Johns. Milliken was reportedly found dead at the restaurant Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026.
According to a spokesperson for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the restaurant following a reported suicide and found Milliken at the scene. Authorities are handling the circumstances surrounding his death.
Grumpy’s Restaurant expressed deep sorrow over Milliken’s passing and extended its thoughts to his family, including Leah Milliken, as well as the St. Johns restaurant team and everyone affected by the tragedy. The business said it would refrain from discussing details of the death out of respect for the family and because the matter is being handled by the appropriate authorities.
The St. Johns location was temporarily closed following the incident and was expected to reopen during normal business hours. The restaurant said its immediate priority was supporting Milliken’s family and employees while ensuring the location was handled appropriately.
Milliken and his wife, Leah, became part of the Grumpy’s Restaurant story when they opened the St. Johns location at The Fountains in August 2021. The couple had developed a strong connection to the restaurant brand and saw an opportunity to establish a local gathering place for families and friends.
Grumpy’s had already developed a reputation for community involvement, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Founder and CEO Daniel DeLeon donated his salary to help keep employees paid during difficult operating conditions, while the restaurant also provided meals to healthcare workers, firefighters, police officers, and grocery store employees.
For the Millikens, that community-centered spirit was an important reason for becoming franchise owners. Today, friends, employees, customers, and community members are remembering Justin while offering condolences to those closest to him.
